From the data, we ascertain the experimental rates and rate constants associated with both nucleation and cluster growth. Water/nonane cluster mass spectra remain essentially unchanged, or show only a slight alteration, upon introducing an additional vapor; no mixed clusters formed during the nucleation of the blended vapor. In addition, the nucleation rate of either material is not substantially altered by the presence or absence of the other species; that is, the nucleation of water and nonane occurs separately, indicating that hetero-molecular clusters do not partake in nucleation. The measurements at the lowest temperature in our experiment, 51 K, provide evidence that interspecies interactions inhibit water cluster growth.
