Consequently, we created a smartphone application integrating structured guidance with sound therapy, and subsequently carried out a pilot study to assess adherence to the treatment and the amelioration of symptoms (trial registration DRKS00030007). The outcome variables, tinnitus distress and loudness, as determined by Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), along with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), were measured at the initial and concluding examinations. A multiple baseline design, incorporating a baseline phase using only the EMA, was subsequently followed by an intervention phase that included both EMA and the intervention. Included in this study were 21 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus, lasting six months. Overall compliance rates varied between modules: EMA usage at 79% daily, structured counseling 72%, and sound therapy representing a considerably lower rate at 32%. The need for tools to monitor daily physical activity (PA) is significant for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). In contrast, current research-grade options prove unsuitable for independent, longitudinal implementation, burdened by their cost and user experience. The validity of step-count and physical activity intensity metrics from the Fitbit Inspire HR device, a consumer-grade personal activity tracker, was evaluated in 45 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients (median age 46, IQR 40-51) undergoing inpatient rehabilitation. The participants in the population displayed moderate mobility impairment, with a median EDSS of 40 and a range of 20 to 65. Assessing the trustworthiness of Fitbit's physical activity (PA) metrics—specifically step count, total PA duration, and time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)—during both scripted tasks and everyday activities, we analyzed data at three aggregation levels: per minute, daily, and average PA. Agreement with manual counts and diverse Actigraph GT3X-based methods served to evaluate the criterion validity of PA metrics. Convergent and known-group validity were established by examining correlations with reference standards and linked clinical measures. The concordance between Fitbit-generated step counts and time spent in light or moderate physical activity (PA) and reference measures was excellent during scripted activities. Conversely, the correlation with time spent in vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was not equally strong. Step counts and time spent in physical activity (PA) during free-living periods exhibited a moderate to strong correlation with reference measures, although the degree of agreement varied based on the specific metrics, level of data aggregation, and the severity of the disease. The prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD), a significant psychiatric concern, often struggles with low diagnosis rates, as diagnosis hinges on experienced psychiatrists. EEG, a standard physiological signal, displays a significant association with human mental processes, thereby acting as an objective biomarker for the identification of major depressive disorder (MDD). A stochastic search algorithm, integral to the proposed method for EEG-based MDD detection, leverages all channel information to select optimal discriminative features for each individual channel. We rigorously tested the proposed method using the MODMA dataset, employing both dot-probe tasks and resting state measurements. The public 128-electrode EEG dataset included 24 patients with depressive disorder and 29 healthy control participants. Utilizing the leave-one-subject-out cross-validation method, the proposed approach exhibited an average accuracy of 99.53% in the fear-neutral face pair experiment and 99.32% in resting-state analysis, thus outperforming other state-of-the-art MDD recognition approaches. Our experimental results further suggested that negative emotional stimuli can lead to depressive states; importantly, high-frequency EEG characteristics exhibited strong differentiating power between normal and depressed subjects, potentially serving as a diagnostic indicator for MDD. Significance. The proposed method presented a potential solution for intelligently diagnosing MDD and serves as a foundation for constructing a computer-aided diagnostic tool to support early clinical diagnoses for clinicians.
