Our synthesized framework proposes that interventions can impact work-nonwork outcomes via mechanisms that differ based on (a) their nature (resource-enhancing or demand-reducing); (b) their locus (personal or contextual); and (c) their scope (work, non-work, or boundary-spanning). In these 26 pre-post control group design intervention studies, we perform a meta-analytic review of the interventions' efficacy, involving 6680 participants. The meta-analysis uncovered a statistically significant overall main effect related to improved proximal work-nonwork outcomes across all the interventions assessed. When comparing various interventions seeking to increase resources, we observed more positive outcomes associated with personal resource interventions in non-work settings, as opposed to interventions targeting contextual resources or those occurring in work or boundary-crossing settings.
